On Saturday, August 19, 1967, the all-Black, segregated Central Jurisdiction of the Methodist Episcopal Church elected its 14th and final Episcopal leader, Bishop L. Scott Allen. This election and the ensuring service of consecration were the final acts to be performed by the jurisdiction. BMCR, the organized Black Caucus of The United Methodist Church, is one of the denomination’s five U.S.-based racial-ethnic caucuses. The BMCR caucus represents more than 2,400 black United Methodist congregations and approximately 500,000 African American members across the United States. BMCR eventually tackled sexism and gender discrimination. Both those fights continue within the Black arena for the purpose of creating equity at every level of the church and in society.
